Too soon to sing Christmas music? Not according to this…
When is it “too early” to start singing Christmas music?
If you ask my wife the answer is, “It’s never too soon!”
But what about in your church?
That’s been a “hot topic” this November as retailers have more than encroached on Thanksgiving and Halloween to put us in the Christmas (i.e. buying) spirit earlier than ever.
Black Friday is now Black November. Every major online retailer already has ongoing Christmas sales. And some stores and restaurants started playing 24/7 Christmas music as soon as the trick-or-treaters fell asleep on All Hallow’s Eve.
It’s enough to drive the people in your church and mine crazy!
In fact, a recent survey found that 55% of people think it’s too soon for Christmas music.
All of this hub-bub about Christmas coming too soon has many worship leaders asking…
When should MY church start singing Christmas music?
I’ll be the first to say that starting to sing Christmas music in church has nothing to do with Halloween, Thanksgiving or retail stores trying to make a buck.
And while every church will make their own determination based on the start of their Christmas teaching series, past church traditions and more, I believe every church should have a plan for when (and how) to introduce Christmas music.
A 1,700 year tradition?
Going “all in” on Christmas music in November could cause a backlash like we’re seeing in culture this year. Too much Christmas too soon means your church is “sick of it” before December 25 ever rolls around.
As pastors and worship leaders we need a better strategy, and the 1,700-year-old season of Advent is a great place to start.
This year Advent begins on Sunday, November 29 and lasts through Thursday, December 24.
On on my new resource, The Worship Leader’s Guide to Planning (and Surviving) Christmas, I share with you the history and significance of Advent and how this ancient tradition can help you plan powerful Christmas services this year!
