Learning from the Best (and Worst) of 2012

Last week I shared with you about a powerful year-end evaluation process that can help you wrap up 2012 and prepare you for all that God has in store in 2013.

Effectively evaluating this year before you start the next can help ensure that none of the lessons of 2012 are lost, and none of the mistakes are repeated in 2013. Like any good worship service this year is not over until it’s been properly evaluated and debriefed.

Take it from me . . . I’ve tried it both ways.

In the early days of ministry, I approached the end of the year without thinking about how I could learn from it, and tried to seamlessly go on to the next year without missing a beat.

The problem was because I had not spent a little time learning from the past year, I set myself up to make the same mistakes, miss the same opportunities, and unfortunately repeat the same ministry challenges I faced in the previous year.

Trust me . . . that’s not the way to start the new year 🙂

You and I don’t want to reach the end of NEXT year, look back and realize we are the same people that we were a year ago. A year wasted, fighting the same battles, dealing with the same struggles.

That’s not what you want, not what I want, and certainly not what God wants.

So, with question #1 answered last week, let’s move on to this week . . .

#2 – What was my BEST day in ministry this year?

Can you name your best day in ministry over the last year? If you’re like me, you can probably name more than one (that’s actually a good thing -ha!). Taking a few minutes before this year is over to write out your answer to this question will do something very important for you . . .

It will help you remember the ministry successes of 2012 AND CELEBRATE THEM. Honestly, most of us aren’t great at celebrations. We see God do something great in our worship teams or churches, we give it a nod, and before you know it we’re back to work. What could have been an opportunity to celebrate can easily turn into “yesterday’s news eclipsed by today’s challenges”.

So, take some time to write down the best days of ministry you had in 2012. Remember how you felt, where you were, and what the circumstances around that “best day” were. Celebrate it and ask yourself, “How can I have more of those days in 2012?”

#3 – What was my WORST day in ministry this year?

Can you name your worst day in ministry in 2012?

Again – if you’re like me you can probably name more than one. You might be asking, “After spending time celebrating the best day, why would I want to reminisce the worst day?”

No doubt there are lessons to be learned from both, and I dare say the lessons you learn from your worst days may be the most important lessons of the year. Why was it your worst day? What happened? What caused it? What did you learn from it? What can yo do to ensure it never happens again?

Remember – God never wastes a hurt. Hard days in ministry can provide a wealth of knowledge in faith and leadership that you might not learn any other way.
