Beat the Summer Slump

A worship leader told me once that the summer was the worst time of year for him and his team to grow. He went on to explain that because of this, he took it easy during the summer, didn’t challenge his team (or himself) to grow and just coasted through until fall arrived.

What I told him next was hard for him to swallow, but absolutely true.

Because he “took the summer off” from focusing on the growth and health of his team, he stumbled into the fall with the same team, the same challenges, and unfortunately, a full 25% of the year wasted!

I don’t want to see that happen for me or you this summer.

So, this summer you have a choice to make. . . you and your worship team can either GLIDE or GROW.

If you’re like me, you don’t want to miss out on any opportunities that God has for you this summer. Over the course of the next 3 weeks we’re going to talk about 3 ways you and your team can renew your passion, prayer life, and processes for growth this summer.

Let’s take them one at a time and start at the top. In order for you and your team to grow this summer you must have . . .

#1 – A Passion for Growth

Too many worship leaders have a “We’ll just grow as we go” mentality. Put personal growth and team growth really don’t work that way. The worship leaders and teams who are excelling in the calling God has given them are intentional about their growth.

I’m surprised to hear worship leaders who sometimes say things like, “I have all the training I need to lead my team” or “I have enough people serving on my team.”

Listen – if that’s your vision for yourself and your worship ministry, your vision is way too small!

Trust me, God wants to do more in and through you than he’s doing right now. But you have to be intentional about doing your part as well.

If you have a passion to grow this summer, that’s awesome! Fuel that passion by stretching yourself, learning and growing this summer. Maximize your time with God, read books on leadership and team building, intentionally work to add new people to your team, and challenge your current team to grow in these areas as well (more on that in the next two weeks).

If you don’t have a passion to grow, take some time this week to pray and ask God to give it to you. Try to identify the source of your stagnancy. Have you lost some of your zeal for ministry? Are you intentionally keeping the team smaller because you aren’t sure how to lead a larger team?

Change your thinking . . . partner with God . . . and deepen your passion for growth this summer.
